Motivation
What drives me in making music is the steady need of self-expression. Making a statement to myself and others, digging out emotions I haven‘t had before and entertaining these by translating them into sound are the things that feed my musical passion. Drums were the instrument of choice since I have been a kid.
My father teached me in listening closely to any instrumental performance within music. Especially drums he pin-pointed strongly because he had been a drummer himself. He started with Led Zeppelin and led me to more complex composings, such as Mahavishnu Orchestra, Brand X, Billy Cobham, Chick Corea, Steve Gadd and all their musical sourroundings. I was overwhelmed by all the possibilities of expression, just by using the language of rhythm.
This influence has shaped my musical practice even to this point. Today I also like and play to jazz, fusion and rock music, which ultimately paved the way to my career as a drummer.
Nevertheless I explored other genres as well. I made my experiences in covering songs, but always tried to weave in my own personality and ideas.
That is why I always have been fascinated by improvisation. Being in the absolute moment really speaks to me the most and I constantly try to free myself up in making choices of play and sound. This is an important part of my practice routine as well.
When it comes to learning the drums, I therefore always try to achieve as much improvisational freedom as possible. In fact that is my guiding thought behind any instrumental learning path. But with drums I have been following it the longest.
Being able to feel comfortable within every musical genre of choice and to play with any musician who is asking for it, are my goals in drumming.
If it is about being a musician in general, I can see myself playing more instruments and composing a lot more. The ability to create music and its artistic sourroundings is a dream of mine since I play in bands and on stage.
When I picture myself in a moment of musical fulfil-ment, it requires the ability to create and plan every detail of a musical end-product. May it be a composed song and its music video, or a full live performance. I would feel
amazed about these being my own creations completely. That does not mean that I invision my musical future as a one-man show. It is exactly the opposite because I think music lives from shared experience and mutual creativity. Otherwise, music would just be made for competition purposes, which does not correlate with my ideal of free musical expression.
I can see myself in a band and having a solid playground for experimenting creatively because I love to connect with people, induced by my love of improvising and jamming. Furthermore, the process of composing together as well as discussing individual ideas while running a band is what I love to do.
What I consider to be irreplaceable is the social value that comes along with it. It can become something really strong! Something family-like and that is uncomparable to anything else. Something I would love to have in my future as a professional musician.
To conclude, I would say that my professional practice will take place in one or multiple band projects, but also in being a solo artist or someone to hire. I am sure that my own musical voice will find recognition and interest in the business.
